Sri Bhagavad Ramanuja lived during the rule of Kattiyam Yadava kings. Once, Chidambaram Govindaraja Swamy had to leave the sacred legendary shrine of Chitrakoot on the banks of Kaveri river and reach Tirupati on the footsteps of Tirumala. He was hailed as another form of Lord Venkateswara and worshipped here. At that time, Sri Ramanuja wanted that Govindaraja should enjoy all rituals and riches on par with Lord Venkateswara. Towards this end, he laid a lotus flower in the hand of Andal and got the sacred throne engraved with the yantra and mantra required for the wealth-yielding Vyooha Lakshmi. On the evening of the day of Poorvaphalguni star in Kataka month, Sri Malayappa Swamy goes to Purisai Garden in a wooden Tiruchi in a wider circumambulation. There, different preparations are distributed to the devotees after offering them to the Lord. Later, the Lord is taken to Pogada tree and is offered camphor light. The remnants of camphor light, flower garland and sathari are given to the Pogada tree. The priests get the Sathari without keeping it in the tiruchi. As the Lord enters the street crossing the Gajendra Moksha pavilion, He is offered camphor light followed by anointing of Lord’s sathagopa for sanctification. After another offering of camphor light, the sathari is placed in the Tiruchi. Then, the Lord goes back to His original abode. This is the ceremony at Purisai Garden. Some inscriptions reveal the details of this ceremony. Though it was in vogue in the past, it was discontinued in the middle. It was called Tota Tirunal or Topu Tirunal. It figures for the first time in the February 17, 1494 Inscription (113th Inscription, Volume 2) during the regime of Saluva Narasimha. It belongs to Niyogi Timmana Danda Nayaka of Haaritha Gotra and Aswalayana Sutra, resident of Chandragiri. It refers to the Purisai Garden ceremony held for twenty days. It also mentions that Timmana Dandanayaka offered services to the Lord on the eleventh day of the ceremony. The September 15, 1542 Inscription (28th Inscription, Vol. 3) during the rule of Srikrishna Devaraya is the second one to mention this ceremony. Insription 18 of Vol. 4 mentions the Garden Ceremony of Jayyapu Nayakar. 19th Inscription mentions the Garden Ceremony of Moorthi Nayakar, son of Katlakonda Nayakar, resident of Kumarapalli. August 7, 1554 Inscription is the only complete inscription that we find in this regard. It mentions the order of this Garden Ceremony in detail including the services, donations, offerings of food and other items, etc. for Malayappa Swamy, His twin consorts (Sridevi and Bhudevi), Lord Krishna, Vishvaksena and Bhashyakara. To meet this expenditure, Moorthi Nayakar purchased land worth 75 rekhaipans including Rajendrasinga Nalloor land worth 50 rekhaipans and Pudipatla Lake canal land worth 25 rekhaipans, and offered it to the treasury of Tirumala. These deities are anointed with musk, sandal powder, etc. Decoration, offering of food, camphor light offerings, sathari rituals are continued even now. The last Garden Ceremony conducted like this was mentioned in the 6th Inscription of Volume 13 of March 31, 1606. Vijayanagara treasurer Bokkasam Krishnaiah conducted this in the flower garden named after his father Bokkasam Narasaiah. But, there is no evidence to its continuance later during the rule of Nawabs or Company, or Mahants. Purisai Garden Ceremony also comes under this category. It is being conducted in the Tirumala rock garden of 1527. The birth day of Goda Devi happens to be Anantaalvan’s breathing his last. Hence, this festival marks both these occasions. Andal’s Tiruvaadippooram festival is also held. He used to collect those flowers, braid them into garlands and offer them to the Lord of Tirumala every day. Adorned with these garlands from top to bottom, the Lord used to give His darshan to the devotees exceedingly bright. Fascinated by the beauty of these garlands, the Lord, it appears, was once inquisitive to see Anantaalvan’s garden. He went to the garden alongwith Alamelmanga at night after the doors of Ananda Nilayam were closed. It became a routine every day for the divine pair to visit the garden and spoil it. Anantaalvan prayed to the Lord with great anguish. Feeling sorry, the Lord appeared to the Alvan alongwith His consort at midnight the next day. Anantaalvan wanted to catch hold of them. But, the Lord escaped somehow, while the Lady was caught. The Alvan tied her to the Sampangi tree with creepers. She appealed to him for release in vain. He was on the prowl for her husband. At last, he saw the man running away from the garden and running north to the temple from the south street. He ran after him, but could not catch him. He returned in disappointment. The Lord then pacified the anxious priests and directed them to go to Anantaalvan’s garden where she was confined and take her back with all honours. Awe-struck, they all went to Anantaalvan and praised him as the most fortunate devotee for confining no less a lady than the consort of the Lord Himself. Anantaalvan deeply regretted his ignorance. He prostrated before her and seated her in a flower basket and took her to the temple. Lord Srinivasa was quite happy and called him his father-inlaw for offering Alamelmanga like a daughter in a basket as in marriage to Him. The Lady flew to the Lord to occupy His chest as usual. He would go back to the temple in procession later. So, this day is regarded as the day of Anantaalvan’s breathing his last. Anantaalvan, it is believed, was transformed into a Pogada tree in his Brindavan. These are the days when the Lord sallies forth to give darshan to everyone outside the temple. This helps the sick, the disabled and very old people to see the Lord face to face and receive his blessings. The Lord does not simply walk around the streets. He initiates a special joy, an ecstasy, by coming on different Vahanas. The excitement of the devotees is to be seen and enjoyed. Not only the Vahanas, the traditional reciters recite verses from NalayiraDivya Prabandham, the sacred Book of the Srivaishnava community. This entwining of our Sanskrit heritage since the Vedic times and the Tamil hymns that are more than a million years old and drip honeyed sweetness are the special features of the Vishnu temples all over the world. Gaambhiryam and Maadhuryam form this unique feature of these temples. Custom has planned the lovely series for the annual Brahmotsavam. The first three days are appropriately devoted to the first three Antadis (Tamil satakas) for these three verse-garlands by Poigai, Bhutat and peialwar herald the Sri Vaishnava movement itself. There is a charming legend associated with these three Alwars. In the 6th century A.D., immediately after the Kalabhra interregnum had devastated the Tamil Nadu, there was only the sad spectacle of large scale destruction and desecration of sacred temples and the cultured living that had evolved from the ancient Sangam period. It was now that Poigai, Bhutat and peialwar met at Tirukoilur which already had a very ancient temple dedicated to Vishnu as Tiruvikrama. As it was raining heavily and it was a pitch-dark night, they took shelter in a dark room in one of the houses. Suddenly they sensed the presence of a fourth person in the room. This Light glows within us all the time! “With love as the cup, aspiration as ghee, A ceaselessly joy-filled thought as the lighted wick, I have lit the flame of knowledge to Narayana, By means of the revelatory Tamil language”. The three devotees realized who the new comer into their consciousness was: so Peialwar sang: “I have seen the Mother, the golden image! I have vision the sun-like splendour too. The battle-ready and fire-red discus golden, And the whorled conch. All these did I see In the person of my Ocean-hued Lord”. Since, Mother comes (Sri) first to the sight of the devotees, Vaishnavism is fondly known as Sri Vaishnavism for the devotees. Each of the three Alwars sang a satakam. Together they have some brilliant scenes and similes, while devotion envelops the verses. During the Brahmotsavam, the Lord comes on various Vahanas on nine days. Usually, the DivyaPrabandham verses are chosen in a way that links them to the Vahana on which the Lord comes to bless us. For instance there are two Sesha Vahanas which are used on the first two days. For instance, PoigaiAlwar sings ecstatically of the many ways in which Adisesha serves the Lord. The 53rd verse of the Antadi lists the services thus: when the Lord walks, Adisesha becomes an umbrella (as he did when Vasudeva carried the baby Krishna from Kamsa’s prison to Nanda’s Gokula in a basket. Adisesha protected the child in the basket from the torrential rains.) When the Lord is seated, Adisesha becomes his throne (as we find Andal asking him in the 23rd verse of Tiruppavai, to grant boons when he is seated in the grand Lion-throne). When the Lord stands, Adisesha becomes his sandals (as in the Ramayana when Bharatha received Rama’s sandals as a guardian for the kingdom of Ayodhya, till he returned from the banishment to the forest for fourteen years). And when the Lord is resting in the Milky ocean, Adisesha is a float, the gems in his 1000 hoods are the light, Adisesha himself is the gentle silken sheet that enfolds the Supreme Lord. Perhaps enthused by these multi-pronged services of Adisesha to the Lord, we have a Big SeshaVahanam and a Small SeshaVahanam that are processional vehicles for Malayappa Swami. Among other Vahanas that we get to see come in procession is HamsaVahanam. </p><p><br /></p><p>How come a swan? Ah, Lord Vishnu took avatar as a Hamsa. This incarnation is not widely known, yet it is a significant one. The Bhagavata has a fairly detailed passage on the Hamsa incarnation of the Lord, He taught Yoga and Sankhya to Brahma and his mind-born sons, Sanaka and others to underline the supremacy of Vishnu (Book XI, canto xiii, lines 15-42). However, while the teachings are on the difficult pathways of yoga and sankhya, Perialwar has gifted us a beautiful Tamil verse in his Perialwar Tirumozhi (1-9-10) on this incarnation: “The world was covered in pitch darkness; The precious Vedas Four were lost; To relieve the world of this nightmare You came forth as the mighty Swan And gave back the priceless scriptures! Acho! Acho!” ‘Acho’ is a term of wonderment used when talking to children. When the Lord appears on the lion mount, the reciters declaim the 95th verse from Periyalwar’s Moondram Tiruvanthati. The lion, the King of the forests, is a familiar image in Divya Prabandham. The Lord’s walking is often compared to the lion’s gait. In Srirangam, when Sri Ranganatha comes out of the garbagriha in the palanquin, the servitors carrying the palanquin use the simhagati to move forward. Such is the terror and glory that is exhibited by the Man-Lion. Is it not appropriate to remember such verses when Malayappa swami comes out in regal splendour, riding the simhaVahana? In the same manner, Malayappa swami coming on the Horse vahana is also very attractive and the atmosphere is delightful when appropriate verses reminding us of Andal’s soulful verses about the hero riding a horse comes to meet her are sung. There are the Surya Prabha and Chandra PrabhaVahanas too. All the Vahanas are accompanied by verses from the Divya Prabandham, chosen with great care. For instance, the Chariot Vahanam comes out on the eighth day. Everyone will agree that this is a grand sight. The adhyapakas accompanying the Ratha present Tirumangai Alwar’s Tiruvezhu Kootrirukkai, a poem composed in ‘RathaBandham’. Each word in every line is composed with infinite care by the great Alwar, a prolific writer who belonged to the warrior class. When written down, the lines of the poem form into a picture of a chariot, amazing like a puzzle put together. </p><p><br /></p><p>Written as a 7-tiered poem, the numbers 1 to 9 alternate with 9-1 in a meaningful manner. It is a firm belief of the Srivaishnavas that the Lord is as eager to gain the aspirant as the latter is passionately desirous of union with the Lord. Tirumangai Alwar’s poem underlines the grace of the Lord which truly needs no reason to bless the devotee: it is nirhetukakripa! Surrender is the key and this poem of Tirumangai is such a statement of surrender. A painting depicting the poem as a chariot may be seen on the inner wall of Sarangapani Temple, Kumbakonam. The poem was composed in praise of Lord Aravamudha, the presiding (Moolavar) deity of the temple. Tirumazhisai Alwar’s Nanmukhan Tiruvanthadi is associated with Kalpavruksha Vahana and SarvabhoopalaVahana. Appropriately enough, this Antadi is replete with references to the Lord being literally a Kalpavruksha. He grants all our desires! The Alwar exults in the eleventh verse: The Lord with tresses decorated by tulasi, Has for long loved me. Waste no moment, But salute and meditate upon Him. With bowed head, worship him with cool flowers. Praise Him with your lips, gaze with your eyes Upon His magnificent image. Keep your ears listening to his glorious deeds”. It also follows that Lord Venkateswara is the King of all kings on earth. Yes, the way the kings gather and hold and carry the seat of Lord Malayappa swami naturally gets the name Sarvabhoopala Vahanam! Hanuman has crossed the seven seas, entered Lanka, and discovered Sita Devi in the AshokaVana. Naturally she is somewhat confused when this person in the form of a monkey gives her the message of Sri Rama that he would come soon and free her from captivity. But how to believe this monkey to be a messenger of her Lord? It is then that Hanuman recounts some incidents from the life of Rama that are directly related to Sita. The breaking of Siva’s bow and marrying Sita; the defeat of Parasurama; how Sita bound Rama’s hands with a string of jasmines in the privacy of their togetherness; how Rama, Lakshmana and Sita went to the forest directed by Kaikeyi; Rama be friended the forest leader Guha; how Bharata came to the forest and fell at the feet of Rama giving way to his grief; Rama’s mercy to the Kakasura; how Maricha came as a golden deer causing Sita’s separation from Rama; and finally here is the Signet Ring sent by Rama also as a proof, with the promise that he will come soon and free her from captivity. The entire group of these ten verses in Periyalwar Tirumoli (3-10) make up a mini Ramayana, and we cannot stop our tears of happiness when Periyalwar says that Sita received the signet-ring of Rama from Hanuman, placed it on her head, and expressed her relief and joy. No wonder devotees feel that saluting Malayappa swami atop the Hanumantha Vahanam, one gets the punya of having read the entire Ramayana of Valmiki. Such is the very close relationship between the Vahanas in which Lord Malayappa Swami comes out to give us darshan and the scriptural sanctity and poetic beauty of the verses in the NalayiraDivyaPrabandham of the Alwars presented by the adhyapakas on the appropriate days during Srivari Brahmotsavam.</p>

Lord Varaha is but the incarnation of Lord Sriman Narayana. He existed at Venkatachalam in both His forms. After protecting the earth from the demons under the sea, Lord Varaha resided on this hill. Hence, it acquired the name “Varahachalam.”(the mountain of Varaha) Lord Varaha was cultivating millets there with his retinue. He was returning with his retinue after killing the demons who attempted to take away their harvests. Lord Varaha saw Srinivasa and called Him to come out of the anthill. Lord Srinivasa came out. Varaha Swami temple is on the banks of Swami Pushkarini, the Holy tank of Tirumala. Sri VarahaAvataram (incarnation) has its own significance, which we will go through in this article by knowing His preaching. It is told by Lord Sri Krishna in Bhagavat Gita that, He manifests Himself in this world in different forms whenever there is a decline in Sanatana Dharma. While doing so, he protects the Righteous persons annihilating the Evil forces. The Lord incarnated in 10 forms called Dasavataras. They are Mathsyavatara (fish), Koormavatara (Tortoise), Varahavatara (Sacred Boar), Narasimhavatara (Lion-man form), Vamanavatara, Parasuramavatara, Sri Ramavatara, Balaramavatara, Krishnavatara and Kalkiavatara. In three of His Avataras, the Lord has shown His Mercy in very clear terms. They are Varahavatara, Sri Ramavatara and Krishnavatara. He bequeathed us Slokas which enable us get rid of the fear from the miseries of Samsara. They are known as 'CharamaSlokas'. He declares that He enables everyone to attain Liberation from the Material World and provide eternal Bliss, if one surrenders unto Him. In this article, we shall go through the CharamaSloka rendered by Sri Varaha Swami, which is the first and foremost among the three CharamaSlokas referred above. Accordingly they were born as Hiranyaksha and Hiranyakasipu, to Kasyapa and Diti couple. Because of demonic nature, and with a lot of boons obtained from Brahma, Hiranyaksha became very haughty in nature and was even prepared to challenge Lord Vishnu, who is Omnipotent. In fact he grabbed Mother earth, the consort of Lord Vishnu and hid her in deep sea. Coming to know about this, the Lord took Varahavatara, in the form of a Sacred and mighty Boar (as it can travel both in water and land), fought with the Asura, killed him and brought back His consort Mother Earth. At that time Mother Earth, having been pleased by the action of the Lord, entreated Him, with her motherly feeling towards all the living beings on Earth - “Ahamsishyaa cha daasee cha bhakthaa cha thvayeeMadhava I Rahasyam dharma samyuktham thathmaamaachakshvathathvatha: II “Swami! I am your disciple, servant, and devotee. Kindly tell the Upaya (the way) by which all beings can be liberated from this world which is full of miseries”. She further explained her above request, “Mathkruthe sarvabuthaanaam laghooupaayamvada” Please advise the easiest upaya (not the difficult path) so that everyone can attempt and redeem themselves. Then Lord Sri Varaha Swami uttered CharamaSloka, purely out of His Mercy towards the living beings, which consists of two slokas. Sthithemanasisusvasthesareeresathiyonara: I Dhathusamyesthithe smarthaa viswarupam cha maamajam II That has thammriyamaanam thukaashtapaashaana sannibham I Ahamsmaraami math Bhakthamnayaamiparamaamgathim II The brief meaning of these two slokas put togetherIf anyone, when in tranquil mind, and good health, surrenders unto me once in life time, reflecting Me as the Universal Supporter, the Commander within, and the Supreme Deity to be worshipped and the One who has no birth due to any Karma (which is the normal cause of any human birth), I, the Omnipotent, Omniscient, Mercy personified, keeping always in mind the Saranagati (total surrender) performed by my above Devotee, though now he is lying on death bed without any consciousness unable to do any prayers unto me, like a log of wood or a stone, will personally lead him to My permanent abode of Srivaikuntham. One when in sound health and clear mind, totally surrenders his soul to the Lord, the Lord takes the burden of protecting his soul even after his death. The protection here means that He will not give him any more births in this world which is full of miseries.</div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div>The encounter of the same deity in two forms at one place, exchanging pleasantries and conversing with each other is a rare occurrence. Srinivasa requested Lord Varaha for 100 feet land for his residence. Lord Varaha refused to offer it free and demanded a price. Srinivasa replied that he had nothing to offer then but promised that in future, the innumerable devotees who come to Tirumala to see Him would have the Darshan of Lord Varaha first followed by the Darshan of Lord Srinivasa. It was further promised that Lord Varaha would have the Abhishekam (holy bath to the deities) and Naivedyam (offering to God) prior to offering the same to Lord Srinivasa. Lord Varaha agreed to the above and gave 100 feet land to Srinivasa to reside in. It should be understood that their conversation is intended to make us realize that both Varaha and Srinivasa are one and the same. They are the two incarnations of Lord Sriman Narayana. It is enough if we remain conscious that we stand on the soil offered to us by the Lord. Srinivasa also did not pay any price to Lord Varaha. He only offered first priority in Darshan, Abhishekam and Naivedyam to Lord Varaha before they are extended to him. The same principle applies to us. We should be aware that everything belongs to the Lord and that He has granted us the leave to enjoy it. The ancient Shastras also say that we should take the mud bath first and during the bath the name of Lord Varaha be recited. Any item of food should first be offered to the Lord and then be consumed as Naivedyam. This is the meaning of Srinivasa’s promise to Lord Varaha. When Naivedyam is offered; the Lord takes the essence of it and purifies it. This is the underlying meaning. Subsequently, Lord Venkateswara has acquired prominence in the region. But even today, as per the principle agreed upon, the worship and other customary rituals at Tirumala are systematically offered first to Lord Bhuvaraha. Lord Venkateswara is truly pleased only when devotees visit Lord Varaha first. Out of the few inscriptions available about Lord Varaha, there was one made in 1380 in which Lord Varaha was mentioned as “Varahanayanar”. In the later one made in 1476, Lord Varaha was referred to as “Jnanappiran.” Lord Varaha is offered all the temple rituals three times daily as per Vaikhanasa Agama (the process of worship and temple rituals laid down by sage Vikhanasa). The Naivedya is also offered to Lord Varaha prior to Lord Venkateswara. Bhakti Yoga is a hard and time consuming process. Further, one should have the eligibility, knowledge and capacity to perform the same. In contrast, Saranagati is an easier process which can be performed in a few minutes. Further it will bear fruit at the time requested by us. We pray for Moksha at the end of our present life. As such Saranagati is said to be Easier Upaya or means of Moksha. Saranagati is to be done only once for one purpose. That is, you need not continue to do the same repeatedly as against Bhaktiyoga which is to be repeated time and again till the result is attained. In this CharamaSloka, The Lord declares that the Saranagati is to be done once when in good mind and health. It is said in SrimadBhagavat Gita that the Antima smruthi- remembrance of the Lord at the deathbed is compulsory to attain Moksha. The Lord, Sri Krishna says: “Whoever at the end of his life, quits his body, remembering Me alone, at once attains me (8-5)”. “Whatever state of being one remembers Me when he quits his body, that state he will attain (8- 6)”. Arjuna! you should always think of Me. Your activities dedicated to Me, and your mind and intelligence fixed on Me, you will attain Me without doubt (8-7). But one is not sure, whether he will be fully conscious at the deathbed to remember the Lord as prescribed above. However Sri Varaha swami CharamaSloka says that the Lord will remember the person, who has once surrendered, but lying unconscious like a log of wood and stone at the deathbed and lead him to Srivaikuntam. (Though Antimasmruthi is required at the bed, Saranagatanone who has surrendered, need not personally attempt the same by himself as the Lord is already conscious of his Saranagati and will do the needful). The word Bhaktam- in the second sloka does not mean the one who is engaged in Bhaktiyoga. As Mother Earth had requested easier Upaya (LaghooUpayam), it means only the devotee who has surrendered with devotion. The Lord states that He is Viswarupi- the one who has the entire universe as His body. As He is primordial cause of the Universe, He will surely extend protection to all, but expects a small deed like Saranagati, in order to avoid bias to a particular person. Further He states that He is not born like any human being due to Karmas, but manifests Himself as any living being (takes Avatar/incarnation) by His own Sankalpa (wish). So as Sri Varaha Swami said, let us surrender our souls to the Lord with utmost faith and we are assured of the eternal Bliss at the end of our present life.</div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div>The temple of Lord Varaha is situated in the North-West corner of the Pushkarini (a small water pond on the temple premises) of the presiding deity extending towards the East. The temple is built in four parts as Mukhamandapa, Arthamandapam, Antaralam and Garbhalayam (Sanctum sanctorum). It is built on four great pillars with exquisite art and sculpture on them. On the last day of every Brahmotsavam during the star of Sravana, Lord Venkateswara joined by his consorts Sridevi and Bhudevi, accompanied by Chakrathalwar visits Lord Varaha Swami temple as part of Chakrasnana. Within this Mukhamandapa, one can also see a small path for Pradakshinas (Circumambulation). Proceeding further from the Mukhamandapam, one enters the Arthamandapam. Built around the Sanctum Sanctorum of Lord Varaha, it also serves as the path for Pradakshinas (Circumambulations). Further inside, there is a square shaped Antaralam of 5 to 6 feet width. The Deity of Lord Varaha is seen at a height of 2 feet in the Sanctum Sanctorum situated within this Antharalam. The Deity bears the holy Conch and the Disc in the upper two hands with his Consort Bhudevi (the goddess of the Earth) seated on his left thigh. Along with this Presiding Deity, one can also see, one foot tall idols of Varahamurthy and Lord Venkateswara both made of Panchalohas (five-metals) and a few Salagramas. The Mahasamprokshana programme has been conducted on a grand scale in this temple from 23rd to 27th April, 2019. Thus the first god to manifest Himself is Lord Varaha. Hence, Tirumala is also known as the Adivaraha Kshetra (the holy abode of Adivaraha). So, let us all have the Darshan of Lord Varaha first and seek His blessings together with those of Lord Venkateswara and be sanctified.</div></div></div></div></div></div>
