Vinayaka Chavithi Vratham: వినాయక చవితి వ్రతం, వినాయక కథ, పూజా విధానం

Kanipakam is a small village on the bank of Bahuda River

"Kani" means wetland and "Pakam" means flow of water into wetland. According to the legend of the temple there were three brothers and each one had a handicap. Viz., Dumb, Deaf and Blind. They were earning out their livelihood by cultivating a small piece of land.

In olden days water was drawn from the well by way of 'Piccota System'. As one of them used to irrigate the field through the channels, the other two used to ply on the Piccota. On one such operation they found that the water in the well got dried up and they could no longer continue their job. One of them got into the well and started digging it up. He was taken aback to see the iron implement hitting a stone like formation.

Later, he was shocked to see blood oozing out from it. Within in a few seconds the entire water in the well, turned blood red in colour. Thus, startled by this divine sight, all the three became normal getting rid of their deformities. As soon as the villagers came to know about this miracle, they thronged to the well and tried to deepen the well further. But their attempt proved futile because the 'swayambhu' idol (the self-manifested) of Lord Vinayaka emerged from the swirling waters.

Ultimately they offered many number of coconuts with all prayers- modesty kneeling before the new idol afford “MAGALHARATHI” etc. They declared the ideal of “SWAYAMBHU” and tendered number of coconuts. The coconuts water flowed into the channel to a distance of more than one and a quarter acres. The indication of this led to the modification in the usage of the Tamil word “KANIPARAKAM” and later pronounced as KANIPAKAM. Even today the idol is in the original well and the springs of the well are perennial and the eternal. During the rainy season, the holy water from the well overflows even today.

Another striking and strange feature of the idol is that it is still growing in size. At present, we can see the knees and the abdomen of the idol. Smt. Lakshmamma, an ardent devotee had offered a 'Kavacham' (Armour) to the Lord, fifty years ago but today it is out of size and doesn't fit the idol. The holy water from the well is offered to the devotees as theertham.

The First part of every mantra is 'Om'. Om symbolizes 'Ganapati' the God of the Ganas, who fought against the demons and the rakshasa (the evil doers). When the yagana could not be continued and Rishis were not let to live in peace and to continue to perform the rituals they approached Lord Siva. Lord Siva was pleased with the penance of the Rishis and assured them that they would be relieved of their suffering. That was the advert of Sri Vinayaka as the lord of the Ganas assuming the position of Ganadhipathi. Sri Varasiddi Vinayaka is also called Parvathi Thanava, Ganesh, Lamodara, Gajanana etc., related to his birth.

There are various versions in the Puranas like Padma Purana, Linga Purana and Siva Purana about his divine birth and existence who is worshipped by Gods too, to overcome obstacles before their start anything. Even Pooja to other Gods and Goddesses begin with invocation to Sri Ganesha. Lord Vishnu proclaimed that worship revolved to any God is futile, if it is not invoked by the blessing of Sri Varasiddi Vinayaka.

One of the traditions says that Ganesha was a Bramhmachari which means unmarried. It is popular in South India. While in the North of the India, Ganesha is often portrayed as married to two daughters of Bramha i.e. Buddhi(Knowledge) and Siddhi (Spiritual power & Intellectual).

There are number of centres of worship in India where Sri Vinayaka Swamy is worshipped as Siddhi Buddhi Sametha Vinayaka. While the elephant head Deity by himself represents the Pure Pranava.

Navagraha or the Nine Planets has great importance in Hinduism and Hindu rituals. Navagrahas are considered to play a major role in deciding the destiny of man. The Navagrahas are Surya (Sun), Chandra (Moon), Mangal (Mars), Budha (Mercury), Brihaspati (Jupiter), Shukra (Venus), Shani (Saturn), Rahu (North Lunar Node) and Ketu (South Lunar Node). It is believed that these nine planetary deities influence human lives and is responsible for all good or bad times, one faces in life.

Sri Varasiddhi Vinayaka Swamy Temple is nestled in the Kanipakam Village of Chittoor District. This ancient Ganesha Temple is also known as Kanipakam Vinayaka Temple. The Prime deity of this Temple is Sri Varasiddhi Vinayaka Swamy is a swayambhu, self-manifested idol. A very interesting fact is associated with this temple is that Sri Vinayaka Idol size is increasing day by day. It is believed that the idol will be growing in size until the end of Kaliyuga and then Sri Vinayaka will appear in person. The well from where Sri Varasiddhi Vinayaka manifested is still exist in the temple. The holy water from the well is distributed among the devotees as prasadam in this temple. The Temple is believed to be more than 1000 years’ old which was constructed in the early 11th century CE by the Chola king Kulothunga Chola-I. The name of the present Kanipakam village in olden days was called “Viharapuri”.

“KANI” means one and quarter land and, “PAKAM” means flew of water into the land i.e., irrigation. The indication of this was recognized as KANIPARAKAM – ultimately calling as KANIPAKAM which is the Tamil Transcended (Derived) word.

Legends as per the legend of the ancient temple, there were three brothers and each of them had a handicap. One day, they started digging the well for water and suddenly the Iron implement hit a stone like structure. Later, they saw the blood oozing out from the well which made the entire water in the well to turn red. On observing this divine sight, they got rid of their deformities. As soon as the locals came to know about this miracle they tried to deepen the well further.

The "Swayambhu" idol of Sri Varasiddi Vinayaka emerged from the well. Later, people built a temple around the well. Even today, the idol is in the original well and the springs of the well are perpetual. The holy water from the well overflows during rainy season. Another strange feature of the idol is that it is still growing in size. It is believed that swayambhu idol of Sri Varasiddi Vinayaka is the up-holder of truth. The disputes among the people are resolved by taking an oath. It is a regular practice for the people of this region to take a holy dip in the temple tank and swear before the lord to prove their innocence.

Festivals and Celebrations on Vinayaka Chaturthi and English New Year Day are the festivals celebrated in the temple. The annual Brahmotsavam is celebrated from Ganesh Chaturthi which goes on for 21 days with all traditional rituals and gaiety. The colorfully decked festive idol is taken out for procession on all the days on different carriages. The float festival attracts pilgrims from all over the country.

Festivals & Fairs celebrated at the Temple. Brahmostavams for a period of 21 days is the major annual festival. The Brahmostavams will commences from Bhadrapada Suddha Chavithi and be continued for 21 days. During the Brahmotsavam period except temple rituals, Ubhayadara abhishekam other Sevas like Abhishekam, Palabhishekam, Kalyanam, Unjal seva, and Ekathaseva will not be performed. During Brahmosthavams Uthsavamurthulu of Siddi Buddi Sametha Vinayka swamy are decorate specially and taken for procession on various Vahanams in the 4 mada streets of the kanipakam village as detailed below.

Further during Brahmotsavam period Annadanam is being arranged continuously from 10 AM to 10 PM to all the visiting Pilgrims with the co- Operation of Philanthropic devotees.

History

The Temple was constructed in the early 11th century CE by the Chola king Kulothunga Chola-I and was expanded further in 1336 by the Emperors of Vijayanagara dynasty.

There is an interesting legend about the sthala purana of this ancient temple which has 1000 years’ history. About 1000 years back, three physically handicapped blind, dumb and deaf persons were eaking their livelihood by cultivating a piece of land near Viharapuri village. On one day two persons were taking out water with the help of a picot and the third person was irrigating the land. After some time, water was exhausted in the well. One person took a spade and hit a stone inside the well and blood started flowing continuously. When the three handicapped persons touched the water mixed with blood, surprisingly they became normal persons. After digging for some time they found an idol of Sri Varasiddi Vinayaka in the well with an injury on the head oozing with blood. They could not take out the idol as it was growing in size, as they were digging. They informed the villagers about this surprising phenomena. People came running with coconuts and other Pooja materials to worship the Sri Varasiddi Vinayaka. They broke thousands of Coconuts, the coconut water was spread to an area of one and quarter acre. In the local language it is called as "Kani". That is how the place was called as "Kanipakam" since then.

Even now we can see the well around Sri Varasiddi Vinayaka idol. Always water is seen around the idol. We can also see the wound on the head of the idol.Another astonishing feature is that the idol is growing in size. In 1947 a devotee Sri Bezawada Siddaiah of Aragonda Gollapalli village presented a Silver Kavacha to the Lord which correctly fitted the idol. Now, it is not fitting the idol. As the idol is growing in size. Always there will be water at the same level around the base of the idol in all seasons. This sacred water is given as theertham to all other devotees.

Kanipakam where Sri Vinayaka Swamy emerged as “Swayambhu” is located by the side of Bahuda River. There is an olden Puranam for calling the River as Bahuda. After the self-elevation of Lord Vinayaka Swamy at Kanipakam, two brothers namely, Sankudu and Likhithudu wanted to have Darshan of Lord Swayambhu Sri Vinayaka and they made their journey by walk. After having Prolix journey, the younger Likhitudu became very tied, hungry and wanted to take mango fruit from the tree, and asked his brother to help him. The elder brother warned him not to take the fruit, since it belongs to the king. But the younger brother who was too tired, hungry and thirsty took the Mango fruit and ate it. The Elder brother Sankudu dragged his younger brother to the king and narrated the theft of fruit committed by his brother and requested to impose punishment. Unfortunately, the king became angry and vehemently ordered to cut off the both hands of the younger brother who had stolen the fruit without permission, and the punishment was implemented.

The Elder brother became very sad for this unfortunate incident which resulted loss of hands of his brother and at last he desired to take a holy bath in the river near the Swayambhu Vinayaka Temple before going to darshan, and when both the brothers immersed in to the river by praying the Lord Vinayaka. Surprisingly, the hands of the younger brother Likhitudu have come out as existing earlier. Then both the brothers have taken the darshan of the Lord Vinayaka Swamy and offered their vows for blessing them. After that, the two brothers propagated the kindness of Swayambhu Sri Vinayaka among the neighbouring villagers. After that the river in which lord Vinayaka gifted the lost hands (Bahuda) to Likhithudu is called as “Bahuda River”.

Resolving disputes: It is believed that people come here and resolve their disputes by taking a "Special Oath". As per rituals the people in dispute take a holy dip in the temple tank and swear before the lord. Here is that if a person swears(Pramanam) about a particular incident, it is taken as 'truth'. Most of the disputes are settled by this method. People take it as more than a court judgement. If anybody does false swearing before him, Sri Varasiddi Vinayaka shall punish him. For this swearing ceremony a sum of Rs. 516/- is collected by temple authorities. This ceremony is done every day. Thus people get instance justice here.

In the ancient Vedas Sri Varasiddi Vinayaka hailed as possessor of gunas of all gods, gandharvas, demons and human beings. In 'Adarvaseershopanishath' Sri Varasiddi Vinayaka is extolled as the parabhramha embodiment of paramathma that have (The absolute). Hence by taking 'Ganapati deeksha' the devotees can fulfill all their wishes with the blessings of Sri Ganesha. The deeksha will be for an of 41 days (Mandalam), 21 days (half mandalam), 11 days(Ekadasa). It is like Swamy Iyyappa (or) Lord Sivadeeksha. And the rules and regulations are almost the same. Sri Ganesh Deeksha can be started in any Ganesh temple but should end at Sri Varasidhi Vinayaka Temple at Kanipakam only.

The significant feature of the Moola Vigraha (Main deity) is that it faces towards north, which is a rarity. The first rays of the sun, fall on the feet of the Lord. Gradually the sun rays disappear after reaching the head of the Lord. The main idol is said to be growing in size, year after year, and the silver Kavacham of various sizes since 1945, are displayed at the main entrance of the temple.

The legend behind Bahuda River

Long ago there lived two brothers Sankha and Likhita. They were on a pilgrimage to Kanipakam. As the journey was tiring, the younger brother Likhita felt hungry. Disregarding the advice of the elder brother he plucked a mango from the mango grove. Sankha felt bad and reported this to the ruler of that area and pleaded for punishment for the sin committed during the pilgrimage. Thus Likhita was punished severely being deprived of both arms.

Later they took bath in the river near Kanipakam temple. Lo Behold! The chopped arms were restored to Likhita as soon as he had a dip in the sacred waters of the river. These incidents lead the ruler to rename the river as 'Bahuda' (Bahu means human arm). Thus the river beside Kanipakam temple is now known as 'Bahuda River'.

Sri Varasiddhi Vinayaka as up-holder of 'Truth'

The swayambhu idol of Kanipakam is the up-holder of truth. Day to day disputes between people is resolved by taking a 'special oath'. The people in the dispute take a holy dip in the temple tank and swear before the lord. It is taken as gospel truth.

There are instances when the person who committed that sin voluntarily agrees as soon as he had the dip and much before entering the temple itself. It seems the Lord lawns invisibly on the sinner and makes him repent & feel guilty for his sinful deeds.

Thus the glory of Sri Varasiddhi Vinayaka spread far and wide and the honorable courts uphold the 'special oath' in their judicial pronouncements.
